The detonation of an atomic bomb by the Soviet Union in 1949 and the fear by American leaders of a Soviet bomber threat pushed the United States into an urgent program to develop an all-weather jet interceptor.   This sense of vulnerability created a rush to convert the T-33 jet trainer into a jet equipped with a first-of-its-kind radar fire control system.  These first versions of the F-94 were considered to be interim solutions at best.  Because the T-33 was a converted F-80 Shooting Star, it passed along the deficiencies of this early jet fighter to the new Air Force interceptor.  Foremost among these problems was the lack of fuel capacity which severely limited the F-94’s range.  While the thrust of the new jet and its armament would be improved over time there was never a remedy for its inherent design weakness that required nearly all of its fuel to be stored in the wing and wingtip tanks.

The introduction of the MiG 15 into the Korean War in late 1951 and its success in downing B-29s was the main reason for introducing the F-94 into that conflict.  Unfortunately the presence of the F-94 had little effect on MiG operations because Air Force policy forbid the plane be used over Communist controlled territory.  This decision was made to prevent the plane’s secret airborne radar technology from falling into enemy hands.  This is an understandable concern but, unfortunately, this revolutionary weapons control system was highly unreliable and very limited in its effectiveness in directing attacks against enemy planes.  Many of the F-94 missions involved using their technology in night operations to intercept hostile aircraft operating over friendly territory.  These consisted largely of preventing obsolete propeller planes from launching ‘Bedcheck Charlie’ nuisance attacks on allied air bases.

The F-94 will be best remembered for contributing to the air defense of the North American continent between 1949 and 1953.  In 1953 development of the aircraft had matured into its final form as the F-94C Starfire.  The aircraft had substantial greater thrust and its armament had been significantly upgraded from four .50 caliber machine guns in the nose to being able to launch a flurry of 24 missiles at its target.  Development had taken two years longer than hoped for primarily due to the difficulty in perfecting the jet’s new fire control system.  One of the difficulties involved launching rockets near the plane’s radome in the nose which had a tendency to cause an engine flameout.  As it turns out the F-94C had limited service as a front line interceptor as it was soon replaced by the F-89 Scorpion and the supersonic F-86D Sabre.

These initial combat jets were designed under the time constraints of facing imminent threats generated by tensions of the early Cold War.  Pilots on the frontline were Beta testing aircraft often rushed to the field.  Everyone, engineers and pilots alike, was discovering through personal experience what this new jet technology was all about.  If you were a combat pilot over Korea during these years you are eating, drinking and sleeping this stuff or taking on a far greater risk of an early death headed nose first towards the ground.

Like the F-80 Shooting Star the initial F-84 Thunderjet had a conventional straight wing and tail configuration.  Both planes were initially designed to be fighters but their performance wasn’t competitive with the Soviet MiG 15 and they were relegated to a ground-support role.  Both jets served well in this capacity owing largely to their tough and durable construction, with the F-84 possibly being the more rugged of the two fighter-bombers.

The biggest sin committed by these initial American offerings was that lack of pop in acceleration and climb rate that was needed for a front-line fighter.   Just getting a combat-laden F-84 in the air could be a hair-raising experience and it earned the nickname ‘Ground Hog’.  In its role of attacking ground targets the F-84 earned high marks for taking abuse and remain flying as well as providing a stable platform in order to effectively deliver devastating ordinance.  As a tactical bomber the F-84 flew more combat missions than any other jet during the Korean War.  During the early years of the Strategic Air Command the F-84 was used as an escort fighter but NATO forces in Europe saw its value in the role of fighter-bomber.  The US planned on using the F-84F Thunderstreak as a means of delivering tactical nuclear weapons to destroy enemy communications and headquarters.  It meant that the pilot would fly in low to avoid radar detection and rising only to deliver the bomb.  Despite the fact that the bombs descent would be slowed by a parachute there was little hope the pilot and his F-84 would survive the blast.  Such was the desperate thinking of the early Cold War.

The F-84 was relatively simple in design and the compromises required to make it suitable for different roles made it inadequate as a fighter.  Not only was it sluggish but it also lacked the agility to compete with true fighters in a dogfight.  Early versions required wingtip tanks as the extremely efficient nose air intake design left almost no room to store fuel.  Later versions of the F-84 lengthened the fuselage by a foot for fuel storage but the jet still required drop tanks to give it reasonable range.  It’s interesting to note that early versions of the F-84 had a clear canopy while later versions were ribbed.  This was to add strength because the pressurized cabin sometimes blew the canopy free from the jet, creating havoc for the unsuspecting pilot.  When you get in on the ground floor of a technological revolution there are bound to be unpleasant surprises.  You can only hope they don’t turn out to be fatal.

It is easy for us to criticize the shortcomings of these early efforts after the fact.  Experience is a big part of engineering design.  Someone has to be the guinea pig and there are always courageous and competent people ready to volunteer.  Their names never show up on sweatshirts and jerseys like NFL quarterbacks.  They don’t usually make big money from endorsements.  The dream of wealth and luxurious living isn’t what drew them to the cockpit.  They die unknown to most.  Adventure has an allure as does the exhilaration of straddling high performance.  Some pilots probably feel it can’t happen to them when tragedy strikes down a companion.  Does it matter all that much to us what they think?  It’s best we just give them their due.

Serious design on the P-80, as it was known during World War II, did not begin until 1943.  Until then the plane was an idea is search of an engine.  The P-80 became a flyable reality only when Lockheed obtained an early British jet engine, the de Havilland Goblin.  It would soon be replaced by others but early jet engines fell short of generating high performance thrust.  The materials used at the time couldn't survive the blistering stress.  There were other problems in harnessing this new technology and a number of early F-80 pilots were lost, including Major Richard Bong, America’s top World War II ace.  It didn't help that these early jets didn't have ejection seats or exploding canopies.  This equipment would soon be made available but first generation technology can be unreliable and it was true in this instance, as well.  Still, this jet made it through development to become the first operational jet of the United States.

The F-80 Shooting Star has been criticized as being little more than a transitional design – placing a jet engine within a plane made to spin a propeller.  Its generic tail and conventionally straight wings seemed as promising as New Year’s Eve with your librarian cousin but, as you know, first impressions can make for a pleasant surprise.  The fact is the first pilots chosen to fly this jet were thrilled with its handling and overall performance as a fighter.  Sure, the F-80 wasn’t what you’d choose to tangle with a MiG 15 but it certainly did pack a nasty punch down on the deck.  It could dish out any one of a number of nightmares – rockets, napalm or a couple of thousand pound bombs.  The F-80 was durable, too, which is important – what with all those angry people shooting back at you.  It’s a good feeling to have that riddled heap be able to bring you safely all the way home.

It would take the world-class F-86 Sabre to retire the F-80 from frontline service.  Until then, the Shooting Star flew close to 100,000 combat missions in Korea.  The jet continued to live on for many years by adding to it a second seat and rechristening it as the T-33 trainer.  Chances are there are more than a few of them still flying today fifty years later.
